About Community Repair Cafés in New Zealand

Repair cafés are volunteer-run initiatives that have become increasingly popular across Aotearoa New Zealand. These community-driven events promote sustainability and waste reduction while helping Kiwis save money and extend the life of their belongings.

These gatherings serve multiple purposes in our communities:

  • Reducing landfill waste by fixing items that might otherwise be thrown away
  • Building community connections and sharing skills
  • Helping people save money by avoiding replacement purchases
  • Preserving traditional repair skills and knowledge
  • Supporting the growing right-to-repair movement in New Zealand

Repair cafés are part of a global movement that started in Amsterdam in 2009 and has since spread worldwide. In New Zealand, these events align perfectly with our "No. 8 wire" mentality and commitment to environmental sustainability. They provide a practical way to combat our throwaway culture while fostering community spirit and resilience.
